It is important to note that public primary and secondary education is free in the country. It is a provision by the Ministry of Science, Education, and Sports. In Croatia, elementary education takes eight years and is compulsory for all children. This is as stipulated by the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. Starting from 1st to the 4th grade, each class is assigned one teacher. They will teach Croatian, Mathematics, Visual Art, Nature and Society, Physical Education, Religion, Music Education, and a Foreign Language. For the foreign language, most children choose English.
